Jeremy Latimer, Athens Fire Department firefighter, was the 2010 Heroism Award recipient by the Sons of the American Revolution Athens Chapter. The medal and certificate was presented to him during an awards ceremony at the fire department central location recently by chapter secretary/treasurer Sam Whit-ten, assisted by chapter photographer Wayne Stafford, and attended by several of Latimer's peers.

Earlier this year Latimer, and some of his fellow firemen, responded to a call about a partially submerged vehicle in west Athens, in which Herman Rogers was trapped. Latimer went into the cold, deep and rapid current, and was able to pull Rogers through a window of the vehicle.

The SAR Medal for Heroism recognizes outstanding bravery and self-sacrifice in the face of imminent danger ... acts which involve great personal courage and risk to the recipient.
