Marjorie Louise Ponder Smith

Lewisburg-Marjorie Louise Ponder Smith, 87, formerly of Van Nuys, CA, died Thursday, Aug. 20, 2009, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, following a short illness.

Born Sept. 19, 1921, in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Ponder and lone Frazier Ponder Harris.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Charles Smith; son, Edward Charles Smith, Jr.; and sister, Imogene Ponder Floyd.

Mrs. Smith was a long time resident of Van Nuys, CA. She was a retired artisan, having retired as lead supervisor from lncolay Industries, San Fernando, CA, which is a manufacturer of antique jewelry and fine art. Over the years she had been an elementary school teacher, piano teacher, welder for Wilmington Ship Yards on the Liberty Ships in Long Beach, CA, during World War II, seamstress, den mother, and homemaker. Mrs. Smith had a passion for crafts, rubber stamping, camping, gardening, house plants, animals, and most of all, her German Shepherd Service Dog, Gretchi. She was an avid reader and a good story-teller. Mrs. Smith had been living with her daughter, Linda Yoak, in Lewisburg, for the past six years and was a member of the Lewisburg United Methodist Church, Lewisburg.

Survivors include: two daughters, Linda L. Smith Yoak and husband Bill of Lewisburg, and Karen Sue Smith of West Lake Village, CA; daughter-in-law, Rox-anne Hagen of Upland, CA; four grandsons, Scott Yoak, Richard Corredera, Michael Delaney, and Steven Smith; four granddaughters, Jennifer, Karissa, Marcy, and Jessica Corredera; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.
