Velva School District has earned the Gold Star Award for adopting and implementing a comprehensive tobacco-free policy for their school. The award will be presented at the school board meeting on September 14, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. All of the schools in McHenry County have now implemented tobacco-free policy.

Implementing comprehensive tobacco-free policy is a proven effective way to reduce youth initiation of tobacco use. It not only discourages tobacco use, it reinforces the tobacco-free social norm because most people do not use tobacco.

A comprehensive tobacco-free policy includes a rationale for the policy and definitions of tobacco and tobacco use, prohibits tobacco use by students, faculty, staff and visitors at all school events whether on or off school property, and prohibits wearing clothing that advertises tobacco products. The policy also includes an enforcement plan that includes cessation information along with a plan to communicate the policy to students, employees, and visitors.
