On Tuesday, February 23, seven lucky eighth grade girls from Lawton-Bronson were able to attend WINGS at Briar Cliff University.

Those who went were Amanda Schorg, Miranda Marks, Jordan Drew, Brittney Saunders, Marina Jackson, Ashley Williams, Kayla Wede, and Mrs. Kelly a science teacher at Lawton-Bronson School. WINGS provides an opportunity to young women to investigate jobs with science and mathematics.

They started out with a welcome and introduction speeches. Then after speeches they went to sessions that were assigned to them, and in these sessions they learned three different jobs that involved science and mathematics.

After their third session they had lunch at the University. Lastly, after lunch, Dr. Ann Garvey did a speech over public health care, and then there was a closing and dismissal speech to end the day.

Jordan Drew said, "WINGS was really cool and interesting." Brittney Saunders added that she liked how we were allowed different options on sessions to attend, and that we had hands on activities at the conference.

During the Veterinarian session the speaker let two dogs wander around the classroom during her PowerPoint presentation.

Marina Jackson says what she enjoyed about WINGS, "I enjoyed that I got to meet Miss Iowa and learned about how to prepare for college for a career as a veterinarian, and that the 5 second rule isn't true!"

During the Chemist and Technical Service Specialist session the girls attending this session, had to eat three Gummy Bears and try to guess the flavor of each.

Kayla Wede recalls, "I remember going through all of the stations at the nursing session, also trying to guess the Gummy Bears flavors, and having the dogs running around in the veterinarian session."

There were many sessions for the girls to attend; they only attended three that they got to choose prior to going to the Wings conference. Amanda Schorg felt that her favorite session was nursing.

The girls learned many things from WINGS. Ashley Williams learned that during the Chemist and Technical Service Specialist session that if you put half and half cream, food coloring, and Dawn dish soap altogether, the liquids will swirl on their own.

"I really liked the experiments we did during the sessions, and how they showed us career paths that I heard of. I suggest that all girls who have interests in science and math should come to WINGS." Miranda Marks says about her experience with the WINGS Conference.
