Board Approves Adding Up to Five More Students

The Meriwether County Board of Education voted at its Tuesday meeting to approve a resolution allowing increases in the sizes of classes.

Recognizing that the state continues to experience an economical downturn that will cause future declines in local revenues, the Board authorized Superintendent Carol Lane to increase the class size maximums for the school year 2010-2011.

The State Board of Education has granted an exemption from all statutory and regulatory class size maximums for the next school year because the General Assembly was unable to appropriate funds to pay for the current statutory class size maximums.

THE BOARD authorized Lane to increase the class size maximums to exceed the current requirements by 1-5 students in grades K-12 in Regular Education, 1-5 students in English Language Learners, 1-5 students in Gifted, 1-5 students in Early Intervention Program, 1-5 students in Vocational (CTAE), 1-5 students in Alternative Education Program and 1-3 students in Special Education classes.

In other business:

The Board approved the Financial Report as presented by Lane, who subbed for Financial Director Byron Jones. He was absent because of the death of his grandfather. SPLOST collections totaled $131, 485, which was down from last month and from this time a year ago, but still ahead of last year's total at this time. Lane said Jones is ready to close the books on the past fiscal year.

THE BOARD approved Laurie Pate's request for an overnight trip for next year's seventh and eighth grade Quest students for September 28-30, 2011 to Savannah and Skidaway Island.

The Board approved the request of Janice Owens, George E. Washington Elementary School Principal, for a field trip for fourth and fifth graders to New York City March 29-April 3, 2011.

The Board approved the CTAE (Vocational) Local Plan.

The Board approved Policy DIB: Financial Records. The major change to the policy is that software that does not exceed $500, 000 will not be capitalized.

The Board approved the Personnel recommendations as presented by Assistant Superintendent Solomon Ferguson.
