We left Bolan July 10 and returned Aug. 10, 2009, going from Granite City, IL, to Ft. Peck, MT. The group plans to finish the route to the Pacific Ocean next summer on our "Lewis & Clark Bicycle Tour" along the Missouri river.

There were as many as 25 and as. few as 13 participants. 1,737 miles were pedaled in 26 riding days, averaging 66.8 miles per day with four rest days in Boonville, MO; Sioux City, IA; Pierre, SD; and Bismarck, ND. The weather was unusually cool with temps ranging from 40 to 90 degrees, and only a couple grueling days of headwinds.

Highlights included seeing a statue of Robert Waldow, the world's tallest man in the world; tour of lock & dam #26; two ferry rides across the Illinois and Mississippi River; three days on the Katy Trail; celebrating the Amelia Earhart Festival in Atchison, KS; sunflower fields; visiting three state capitols; the Dakota Zoo; Ft. Mandan; Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site; Ft Peck Power Plant near the largest earth-filled dam in the US, more than three miles across; a number of Lewis & Clark Interpretive Centers and seeing pronghorns.

Grandma Linda Nydegger drove the motor home while Kelsie and Cole Willert took turns riding the tandem with their mom, Lori, or riding their own single bike. Scott joined them for the first five days and visited for a couple days when near Sioux City. Grandpa Joe came out to Pierre and stayed six days. He and Cole tried their luck fishing a few times, and have a few fish stories to tell.
