Jeanne Brewster Thacher Turner, 87, of Nunn, died Aug. 25, 2010.

Jeanne was born Dec. 31 1922, in Columbus, Ohio, to Col. Edward S. Thacher Jr., and Virginia Dent Van Swearingen, the youngest of six children. Her early years were spent in Pickaway County, Ohio, on her grandfather's farm. It was a wonderful childhood surrounded by sheep, cattle, pigs and horses. Jeanne's first horse was a retired mare of her grandfather's.

Later, she acquired a pony, which enabled her to get her first job, carrying jugs of water on each side of the saddle horn to men in the field pitching hay. Life was free as Jeanne and her pony traveled through the country, and the pony heard all of her troubles and secrets. Jeanne attended

St. Mary's College and Ohio State University. During World War II, she worked for the Air Service Command and the IRS. She later worked for Columbus Bolt and Forging, IBM and operated her own day care center. In 1957, Jeanne and her family moved to Arvada, where she worked for Mountain States Construction Co. and a local television station. She met and married Col. I. Russell Turner, and they eventually moved to Col. Turner's family farm in Nunn. In Nunn, Jeanne began raising and showing Saddlebreds, Arabians and National show horses. Her horse Sha Boom+++ was a National Top 10 Champion. Throughout her long career as a breeder and trainer, her horses were awarded with many trophies and accolades. Mrs. Turner was known throughout her life by her love for animals, especially horses.

She is preceded in death by husband, Col. I. Russell Turner and her stepson, Ivan "Jay" Turner. She is survived by her son, Rom H. Barnes; a daughter,

Barbara Nelson; stepchildren, Judy DeVore and John Turner; her grandchildren, Tucker Nelson, Nathan Nelson, Gregory Barnes, Jeremy Barnes, Devlin DeVore and Ashley DeVore; and great-grandchildren, Riley and Blake Nelson, Sarah Grace and Connor Joe Nelson.

A memorial service was held Aug. 31 at Mountain View Cemetery in Nunn. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Colorado Horse Rescue, (720) 494-1414.
