Geraldine F. Gies

Geraldine "Geri" F. (Derr) Gies, 83, died Sept. 4 at the HospiceCare Center in Louisville, Colo. Geri was born Dec. 13, 1926, to Jack and Frieda (Bott) Derr in Galeton, Colo.

A graveside service will be held at 11:15 a.m. Friday, Sept. 10 at Fort Logan National Cemetery, 4400 W. Kenyon Ave., Denver. A celebration of Geri's life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11 at Hover Manor Chapel, 1401 Elmhurst Drive in Longmont.

Geri attended Pierce High School and received her business certificate from Emily Griffith Business School in Denver. She married John A. Gies, Jr., in February of 1959, in Reno, Nev. Geri worked for the federal government at Lowry Air Force Finance Center and in medical records at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver for more than 20 years before her retirement from the federal government. After her retirement from civil service, Geri worked in medical records at St. Joseph's Hospital in Denver and as a home health assistant for a private company, as well as for Cinnamon Park Skilled Nursing Facility.

Geri grew up on the family farm around the Ault/Pierce area. In addition, she lived with her husband on their farm west of Greeley. She had a deep love for family and friends. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren provided her much enjoyment in her life. Geri was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church for several years where she belonged to the Interfaith Quilters and also helped prepare the Sunday bulletin. Geri had a great love of music, especially for country, polka and the traditional hymns, as well as playing the organ. She also enjoyed cooking, especially for her family and friends and doing needlework such as quilting and embroidery. Geri loved playing card games with her friends at Hover Manor and enjoyed playing games with her family on holidays. Geri loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them. She had many friends at Hover Manor and enjoyed visiting with them in the dining room, as well as playing cards with them.

Survivors: daughter, Roberta (Robben) Derr, Longmont, Colo.; sister, Kathy Derr-Olsson, Greeley, Colo.; grandchildren, Shawna (Dennis) Holmes, Drake, Colo., and Brian Emmons, Longmont, Colo.; great-grandchildren, Carson J. Holmes, Drake, Colo., Rebecca Holmes, Commerce City, Colo., and Kirstin Holmes, Commerce City, Colo., as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Gies; son, Jim Newell; brothers, Emmett and Arden Derr; and niece, Robenette Halvorson.
