Jebadiah Thune of Big Stone City was awarded the David and Selina Hume Scholarship in Agriculture for the 2009-2010 school year at South Dakota State University.

Thune is an incoming freshman majoring in electrical engineering at SDSU this fall. He is the son of Jim and Jeanne

Thune of Big Stone City and is a 2009 graduate of the Ortonville High School, where he was active in 4-H, church, basketball and football.

The David and Selina Hume Scholarships in Agriculture were created by a gift from Selina Hume in memory of her husband, David Hume, who died July 29, 1990.

David Hume was born in 1914 in Brookings where he attended first the public schools and then SDSU. David graduated from SDSU in 1936 in Animal Husbandry and in 1940 earned a master's degree in Animal Husbandry and Ag Economics from North Dakota State University. David and Selina met in Fargo, while David was doing graduate work. Selina was a secretary and accountant in the NDSU Agricultural Experiment Station.

Fargo was Selina's hometown and she was educated there before joining the NDSU staff. She had also served as personnel administrator for Sears Roebuck.

During World War II, David Hume transported dairy and poultry products for the US armed forces. After the war, he entered private industry in Chicago as Vice President and Partner of the Frank A. Donnelly Corporation in poultry wholesaling and brokerage. In 1955, David Hume joined the US Department of Agriculture in Washington, DC. His 19-year career in Washington centered on developing foreign markets for US farm products. In 1972, David Hume was named a Distinguished Alumnus by SDSU and was granted an honorary doctorate from State in 1977.

Founded in 1881, SDSU is the state's largest, most comprehensive university. Ranked by the Camegie Foundation as the number one research institution in S.D., SDSU offers more than 200 academic programs to students on the main campus in Brookings and at sites across the state.
