The state Department of Health and Board of Pharmacy has summarily suspended Rosa Sandoval, a pharmacy technician and pharmacy assistant at the Othello Family Clinic, located in the Columbia Basin Health Association building at 140 East Main Street.

She is accused of diverting controlled substances from the pharmacy where she worked.

According to a statement released by the state DOH, Sandoval stole hydrocodone-acetaminophen pills from her place of employment sometime between August 2008 and Feb. 17, 2009.

On Feb. 19, she was found to have more than 480 tablets in her possession and is being charged with intentionally embarking on a pattern of theft, possession and distribution of the controlled substance.

"The pills she took are actually a Vicodin derivative, which is an opioid," said Grant Chester, chief pharmacy investigator, Department of Health, office of investigation and inspection. "They have an immediate abuse potential, which can lead to severe psychological or physical dependence."

Chester said the drug can become addictive over a period of time and when taken in high doses, impairs perception.

He said Sandoval's actions also violate the code of ethics taken by people in her profession.

"Her criminal misuse of trust placed in her as a credentialed pharmacy worker to enforce prescriptions to safeguard the public is inexcusable," he said.

As a result of the action taken by the DOH, Sandoval will not be allowed to practice or be employed as a pharmacy technician or pharmacy assistant in Washington, pending resolution of charges.

She has 20 days to respond to the charges and 10 days to request a hearing.

An inquiry was placed at CBHA regarding the incident, but officials have declined to comment on the matter.

The Board of Pharmacy regulates pharmacists in Washington.
