The Perkins Writer's Group will welcome songwriter and author Curtis "Smokey" Stover to its monthly meeting Wednesday, Sept. 9, at Thomas-Wilhite Memorial Library.

"I've played my old Gibson for over fifty years, and still enjoy playing, even though I'm not very good at it," Stover jokes. "As a songwriter, I tend to be a storyteller, a throwback to songwriters of old."

Stover is also a published author. He has co-written "The Yankee Dollar Conspiracy" for Writers Club Press. He has also finished a second novel and is currently working on a third.

Stover said he finds he enjoys writing mystery thrillers "because I can pattern my villains after people who have given me hell in my life, then kill them. It's legal, too."

As a songwriter, Stover enjoys playing his music for others, and helping aspiring writers' grow their skills. Perhaps this stems from being a teacher, a field in which he gained some recognition. His bio was included in "Who's Who In American Education" in 1992, and in "Who's Who In America" in 2000.

Even though his music is often of the story telling variety, he also enjoys writing blues and old country. Stover will share some of his song writing tips, how to critique and re-write.

The meeting begins at 11 a.m. Everyone is welcome to attend and bring a sack lunch, if desired. Writers are also encouraged to bring work they'd like critiqued.
