A Perkins woman Monday evening turned a misdemeanor traffic violation into a trip to Payne County Jail.

Jonna Rae Murrell, 39, was waiting to appear in Perkins Municipal Court when the court bailiff, Officer Dewayne Hammack, noticed she appeared to be intoxicated.

Hammack contacted Perkins Officer Gene Morris, who asked Murrell to step outside the court room.

Morris said he noted Murrell had bloodshot eyes and an odor of alcohol about her so he asked her if she had been drinking. Murrell allegedly told the officer she had imbibed some beer around 2 p.m. that day, but she wasn't drunk.

Officer Michael Pearson administered a field sobriety test to Murrell and found she had indicators of intoxication. Morris then placed Murrell under arrest for public intoxication. She was then transported to Payne County Jail and booked for the offense. Court Clerk Tiffani DeAr-mond said Murrell was in court that evening to face a charge of speeding 1-10 mph over the limit and operating a motor vehicle with suspended license. Murrell is currently serving a ueierreu sentence tor ursi degree attempted arson following an incident on Feb. 2, 2008, when she tried to burn down her mobile home at Piney River Trailer Park west of Perkins while her grandchild was inside.

Murrell received on Sept. 28, 2008 a five-year deferred sentence for that crime.

The terms of the deferred sentence include paying court and incarceration costs, 50 hours of community service, undergoing a mental health examination and no further violations of municipal, state or federal laws during the five-year deferment period.
