DAYTON, Idaho - Even though West Side dropped it's opener at Lyle Henderson Field on Friday night, 18-14, first year coach Tyson Moser felt positive about the way his team played against the larger 3A Sugar-Salem Diggers.

Sugar received the opening kick-off and mounted an impressive, on-the-ground 8-yard drive that ended up in six points and took almost all of the first quarter.

The Diggers kept things on the ground all night long and used up a lot of time with another drive in the second quarter that ended in another score. The Pirates got the ball back and quarterback Dallas Turnbow ran out of the pocket for 45 yards before being tripped at the two-yard line. On the next play West Side pushed in for the score. A two-point conversion followed and the half ended 12-8 for Sugar.

In the third, Collin Roberts broke through the Digger defense and ran for 37 yards for another touchdown and a 14-12 lead. But in the fourth, Sugar got a 6U-yard run and punched in another six points for the win.

We only have 14-15 varsity players on the team this year. We are low on numbers. We knew Sugar, with its larger team, both in size and numbers, would try and run over the top of us. I didn't know how we would match up with the bigger school.

"But for the most part, we did well. The players really stepped up and played well. We hung in with Sugar and at the end of the game I think they were as tired as we were," said Coach Tyson Moser.

Moser said he felt good about the way Turnbow played. "At the beginning of practice, we told him to run the ball more, especially if he couldn't find an open man to pass the ball to. He did that on Friday. He ran the ball six times and gained 82 rushing yards. Three of those runs came on plays designed for passes."

The Pirates play Ririe this Friday at 7 p.m in an away game.

"We are reviewing game film. We're going to work on blocking and tackling mistakes we made and try and correct those problems by Friday," Moser said.
