Richland County commissioners voted to keep the county classified as "1B" based on valuation and population figures.

The classification is required by the state.

Richland County's total taxable value for fiscal year 2010 is $1,079,476,122. The next highest is Fallon County at $462,377,501.

"We have as much valuation as anyone in the state," County Commissioner Mark Rehbein said. "We're three to even Yellowstone County."

The reason Richland County isn't classified as "1A" is population. The county's population is 9,270. The Montana Association of Counties rules that Class A counties must have a population of more than 30,000.

A letter from the association reads, "That designation is just for our internal uses and has no applicability in statute."

1A counties are Cascade, Flathead, Gallatin, Lewis and Clark, Missoula, Ravalli and Yellowstone.

Other 1B counties are Big Horn, Blaine, Carbon, Fallon, Glacier, Hill, Lake, Madison, Phillips, Roosevelt, Rosebud, Sheridan, Silver Bow and Toole.
