Savage students take advantage of assignment to be creative

Savage teacher Audrey Quale asked her students to create pyramids as part as the world history class' study of Egypt.

She was overwhelmed by the entries made by the sixth-and seventh-grade students.

"All I said was you have to build a pyramid out of anything," Quale, a veteran teacher who hasn't asked students to make pyramids for years, said.

When students presented their entries, the pyramids were made in a large variety of sizes. Materials include such things as sheet rock, pop cans, legos and CDs.

"They had a few weeks and brought them in gradually" Quale said.

She noted students were graded on the project but it wasn't a major grade for the class.

"It was more for fun," Quale said. "The thinking was they could enjoy doing something."

Chase Hagler's pyramid included sand and hair spray He received help from high school student Shay

Stanford and his industrial arts instructor.

"My dad put the frame together," Hagler said. "It was my dad's idea. My uncle had a better idea, but it didn't work."

Ryder Rice said his large pyramid took two days to create and says his father was a big help.

Trey Bloesser had the materials needed for his CD pyramid thanks to his mother, Jan, owning Picture Perfect. "My mom has a lot of CDs because they were ruined," Trey said.

Overall, the students agreed it was a fun experience.

"When I say it didn't matter what size they were, you can see it didn't," Quale said.
