A new ordinance designed to protect the City of Shelton's sewer system is likely to be adopted next week.

No public testimony was offered Monday evening during a hearing on the city's proposed fats, oils and grease ordinance, but the measure has been in the works for about a year now.

The ordinance will require local restaurants and other large-scale producers of fats, oils and greases to install special traps rather than simply dumping those kinds of items down the drain.

The new ordinance has been discussed at several commission meetings and those that will be most directly impacted by its adoption have been in regular contact with city staffers.

The ordinance has been placed on the commission's consent agenda for next week and is likely to pass without further comment.
