Kudos to the commissioners

City commissioners made the right decision this week to rezone 160 acres of land just south of Sanderson Field.

The change in zoning from commercial/industrial to neighborhood/residential use opens the door to much-needed development here in Shelton.

The California based Hall Equities Group now has an opportunity to build a new neighborhood which in turn will allow them to develop commercial, retail and recreational spaces along the west side of Highway 101.

This rezone has been a long time coming and was met with stiff opposition by the Port of Shelton, local pilots and others. The main objection to allowing

the development of a neighborhood so close to the airport had to do with concerns about noise.

The port succesfully appealed an initial rezone be-fore the Western Washing-ton Growth Management Hearings Board due to those concerns and sent the city back to the drawing board.

Extensive studys have now shown that the port's concerns about noise are unwarranted.

After years of doubt, debate, dilly-dallying and deliberation, we hope that the next thing we hear won't be a 747 landing at Sanderson Field, but rather a back-hoe turning some dirt just to the south.
