Academic excellence 2011 Mason County eighth grade

Eighth graders from seven Mason county schools, who were in the top 10 percent academically in their class, were honored at a ceremony at the University of Puget Sound on Wednesday, April 20. This is the 30th program and is sponsored by Shelton Skookum Rotary Club.

The honorees were given a tour of the campus, treated to a lunch, and then honored at a ceremony in Kilworth Chapel on the campus. The Master of Ceremony was Patti Case of Green Diamond Resource Company. The speakers, included:

Dr. George Mills, Senior Vice President for Admissions at UPS; Jill Himlie, Operation Manager of Windermere Realty; Audra L. de Laveaga, senior at UPS and aspiring opera singer; Amber Finlay, Mason County Superior Court Judge and Ramsey G. Larson, junior at UPS pre-med major.

A common theme of all the speakers was that clear goals could be achieved under difficult situation s through hard work, parental support and continuous dedication.

The honorees were given certificates noting their achievement.

In addition to activities of the day, a photograph of each schools honorees was taken. This photograph is enlarged, framed and mounted in prominent location at each school for the admiration of schoolmates.

This program, the Skookum Rotary Scholarship Program, Science Fair, provides numerous improvements to parks, as well as supporting international projects are made possible by funds earned at the OysterFest held the first full weekend in October.
