Focus shifts to Districts

The Mary M. Knight High School track and field team traveled to South Bend High School for a final meet before 1B districts.

The boys team took fourth place out of six schools, while the girls took fifth.

But Mary M. Knight head coach Kitty Brehmeyer said that it was still a good meet, with Mother Nature being kind to the Owls.

"It was one of the first meets where the weather cooperated for us," Brehmeyer said.

But the entire roster was not available due to students having other responsibilities to fulfill.

"There were a lot of them involved with the drama club," Brehmeyer said.

"We didn't have our whole crew with us because the school district had a play."

Senior Brennden Hiles took second in the javelin throw with a distance of 161 feet and four inches.

Brehmeyer said that the senior set a new personal best and has shown that he is one of the best throwers in the state.

"He's improved by almost 30 feet this season," Brehmeyer said.

Sophomore Fayrene Arrington (triple jump), Emily Johnson (400 meters and discus) and Cody Boling (800 meters) were only a few of the Owls that had highlight performances.

"We had a lot of personal bests in the meet," Brehmeyer said.

The boys 4x100 relay team was disqualified after a bad handoff. Brehmeyer said that the team ran well except for the small mistake.

"Had the handoff worked, they would have been right on track for a wonderful run," Brehmeyer said.

As the regular season has ended, Brehmeyer said, the focus for the Owls will be to improve in their events for the upcoming IB district track and field meet on Friday, May 21.

"Everyone is starting to really focus and do well," Brehmeyer said.
