Allyn man charged
Pleads not guilty to three counts of vehicular homicide
A young Allyn man has pled not guilty to three counts of vehicular homicide and one count of vehicular assault.
James E. Schuchard, 20, was arraigned in Mason County Superior Court last week and Judge Toni Sheldon set bail at $10,000.
His next court appearance is slated for May 23 and a trial date has been set for the last week of June.
Schuchard was extricated from the driver's seat of a 1990 Chevrolet Corsica and airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle in the early morning hours of Sunday, March 6.
The single-vehicle wreck
on State Route 3 about a mile north of Allyn left three former North Mason School District students dead. Those killed were Bryan Blackburn, 22, NMHS class of 2008; Daniel Tedder, 20, PACE class of 2009; and Tyler Janku-nas, 20, NMHS/Homelink class of 2009.
A fifth victim in the
wreck, Benjamin Blackburn, 18, was able to walk at the crash site, but was transported to Mason General Hospital in Shel-ton for further treatment. Schuchard, meanwhile, was released from Harbor-view after a brief stay.
The state patrol says that while driving southbound, Schuchard failed
to negotiate a left curve on the highway when the car slid into the northbound lane, rotated, struck a tree on its right passenger side, continued to rotate and rolled, finally landing on its wheels.
The state patrol said that alcohol was a contributing factor in the fatal wreck.
