The cause is under investigation

The cause of an unoccupied house fire early Saturday morning in Cherry Park is being investigated by the Mason County Fire Marshal's Office.

The fire at 8 East Cherry Park was reported just after 1 a.m. on August 29 and the first officer from Mason County Fire District 11 was on the scene three minutes after being called out, according to Chief Jerry Swartos. A number of other fire districts provided mutual aid.

The fire was confined to a downstairs living area. The inside was pretty well destroyed, Swartos said, but the exterior remained standing. There was extensive smoke damage throughout the residence.

The house was not occupied at the time of the fire and no one was injured, Swartos said.

Fire Marshal Craig Haugen was at the scene on Tuesday morning with investigators from the insurance company. He said he had been there over the weekend and on Monday. He said the cause has not been determined.
