Help wanted during holidays

It looks, sounds and smells like the season. The new lattes at coffee stands sure taste like the season. It must be The Season and for most of us it is -- unless you're homeless, unemployed, underemployed or hungry.

The holiday season can be a rough time even for people with a full kitchen and a warm fireplace. For the ever-growing segment of the population without access to many basic resources the holiday's can be brightened up with a little bit of philanthropy.

Join the Journal and the 40 et 8 this year for our 64th food basket drive. Our goal is to raise $35,000 and prepare as many as 1,100 food baskets. For every donation, we mention the philanthropist in the newspaper (see page two of the Living section this week). While the Journal holds the food drive closest to its' heart, there are dozens of other opportunities to volunteer and give.

Also, because of the cold weather, a more immediate need for help was answered by the Mary E. Theler Center in Belfair. The Journal applauds the Theler Center for opening its' doors to the cold and hungry as well as any other organizations that went out of the way to lend a hand.

To donate to the food drive, drop a check by the Journal office at the corner of Third and Cota streets or mail it to Post Office Box 430, Shelton, WA 98584.
