Many in our culture understand that the process of creating art can serve a healing function for an individual or community, and that art itself -- storytelling, poetry, music, dance, painting, sculpture, anything creative -- can also be an agent of healing.

Art frees the body's mechanisms to heal by uniting body, mind and spirit. The creative process is the healer. Pioneering depth psychologists such as C. G. Jung and Otto Rank realized that the arts are the channels through which the soul speaks, according to a press release.

Art as Healing is a rapidly expanding field, with several colleges and universities across the country. Yavapai College, Sedona Campus, will offer a five-week workshop, Art as Healing, on Tuesdays, March 23 to April 20, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Workshop leader by Dr. Melanie Hearth will explore the realms of subtle energies and how we are affected by them, in a fun, hands-on experiential setting.

Participants will explore a wide variety of practices in order to develop or deepen a personal relationship with the synergy of creative arts expression as healing modalities. Some of the techniques that will be incorporated into the course are guided meditation, exploration of the world of vibrational energies, systems of transpersonal guidance, among others.

The workshop is open to everyone, accomplished artists, healers, health care professionals and all who have an interest in learning about how to use the power of art as healing.

Dr. Hearth is trained as a psychologist, with an interdisciplinary doctorate in the synergy of art and healing. She is an energy healer and is a working artist and writer.

When working with others, she combines her education with all of her experiences as an artist and a small-business owner to help students and clients deepen their self-knowledge.
