Funeral services were held for Eugene (Gene) Hiram Schmalz Saturday, August 28, 2010 at American Lutheran Church, Windom, MN. Pastor Terry Frovik officiated. Burial was in Lakeview Cemetery, Windom, MN.

Gene died Wednesday, August 25 at his home at the age of81

Eugene (Gene) Hiram Schmalz was born on June 12, 1929 to Henry and Tempa (Clark) Schmalz in Rockford, IL. As in infant his family moved to Westbrook, MN. Gene was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Westbrook. He received his education from Westbrook Public School where he graduated in 1949. December 31, 1949, Gene was united in marriage to Norma Twait at American Lutheran Church, Windom, MN. After their marriage, they lived in Windom where Gene was a building contractor. In their later years, they spend winters in Mission, Texas. Gene was a member of American Lutheran Church, Windom where he served as usher. He was a City Council member, active with the Boy Scouts, Jaycee's, was a Shriner, volunteer fireman. Gene's enjoyments were golfing, fishing, hunting, building projects, bowling, square dancing, and traveling. His greatest enjoyment was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Norma Schmalz, Windom; children, Dave Schmalz, Los Angelos, CA; Mike Schmalz, Waco, TX; Mark Schmalz (Cristina), Honolulu, HI; and Stephanie Engler, Plymouth; six grandchildren; brother, Dale Schmalz, Mora; sister, Cleo Baker, Walnut Grove; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Maras, Windom, Mary Schmalz, Westbrook and Betty Twait, Windom; brothers-in-law, Kermit Twait, Windom, Don Baker, Walnut Grove; daughter-in-law, Pat Winter, Los Angelos, CA; son-in-law, Doug Engler, Fridley; nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Preceding him in death were his parents; sister, Theone Andreson (Pete) Andreson; brother, Nylo Schmalz; two sisters-in-law1 and two brothers-in-law, Leona (Art) Nelson, JoAnne Schmalz and Ray Maras.
