TEN YEARS AGO

August 30, 2000

Awakening about 3 a.m. on Thursday morning, Mrs. Raymond Marsh noticed a glow through the window at her house. To her shock, the garage was gone! Apparently lightning had struck the garage late Wednesday evening and was smoldering when they went to bed. Lost in the fire were a lawn mower, a roto tiller, a restored '46 bicycle, several containers of gas and oil, and their 1994 Dodge pickup truck.

Bill Fredin is the new Industrial Tech teacher at the high school and middle school. Fredin is a native of Windom.

Funeral services were held August 22 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Pipestone for Pauline Lastine, formerly of Westbrook. Lastine taught in Westbrook for 19 years and was Westbrook Teach of the Year and was nominated for MN Teacher of the Year.

YEARS AGO

August 29, 1990

Over 550 thick-cut pork chops, along with potato salad and beans, were served by the Avoca-Westbrook Farmers Elevator Co. in the Westbrook City Park Wednesday evening. The next night the same number was served in the park at Avoca.

Eighty-eight head of high-quality cattle were exhibited

at the 1990 Beef Royale Live Show held at the Windom Sales Co. on August 22. This is the largest participation since 1983, when the same number of head were entered. 1980 and 1981 were the largest shows when 110 and 106 head respectively were entered.

Last week the census bureau released preliminary figures to the cities. In these figures, all but 2 cities in southwest MN lost residents. Those gaining modestly were Hills and Jeffers.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

August 29, 1980

Doug Bakke was up to his old tricks last weekend when he shot a sub-par 71 on Sunday to win the Club Championship at Rolling Hills Golf Club for the 7th time on the last 9 years.

The Westbrook Christian School began its third year on Tuesday with 18 children enrolled in grades K-12. Last years top enrollment was 10 students. Miss Marlys Erickson is the learning center supervisor and Miss Mary Ann Gross is the Kindergarten teacher. Pastor Willis

Peterson serves as the principal of the school.

Mrs. Arlo Gertner, Westbrook, has won a free fall vacation at Northwest Angle Resort, Angle Inlet, MN. The drawing was made at the MN State Fair.
