The annual American Cancer Society Grand Coulee Dam Area Relay for Life has always had the very serious goal of raising money to help find a cure for cancer, and to raise awareness of the disease and how it can impact anyone at any time.

However, that doesn't mean the committee members, volunteers and teams can't have a good time while they're at it. That is why they have scheduled a rally to kick-off this year's event. The rally is scheduled for Thursday, April 22, 6 p.m., at the Grand Coulee Moose Lodge, 216 Continental Heights.

While the Grand Coulee Dam Area Relay For Life is still five months away, the planning committee has scheduled the kick-off rally to help build on the momentum of last year's very successful fundraiser.

"The rally will be a fun way for past and present volunteers and team members to get reacquainted, and to learn about the new innovations planned for this year's event," says Kathy Baty, event co-chair of the Grand Coulee Dam Area Relay For Life.

Along with other event co-chairs, Lynne Rinker and Susan Miller say it will also be the perfect opportunity for those new to the event to learn more about it before they commit to getting involved.

To add to the festive atmosphere and encourage a good turnout, a light dinner and dessert as well as door prizes will be part of the free evening for those who attend. As a special incentive, any team will be able to register for this year's Relay for only $50.

Relay for Life has| always been a family-friendly event, organizers say, and so will the kickoff. They're inviting everyone from the area to attend, enjoy the atmosphere and to see what Relay For Life is all about.

This year's Grand Coulee Dam Area Relay For Life is set for Sept. 25, at North Dam Park.

Last year's event saw 12 teams raise more than $17,000 for the American Cancer Society. The money is now being used by the society to continue its funding of cancer research, its state and national legislative advocacy, and its educational and patient service programs.

Before the end of this year, more than 32,000 Washington residents will be diagnosed with cancer, and more than 11,000 will die from the disease."
