A former chairman of the school board circulated e-mail notes to a number of local school officials this week about the prospect for federal funds for the district's proposed K-12 complex.

Donna DeWinkler noted that with his retirement from the House of Representatives, Dave Obey, who chairs the House Appropriations Committee, prospects for federal money took a swing in the district's favor.

When Obey retires, the chairmanship will pass along to Rep. Norm Dicks of Washington state. Dicks is the next ranking member of the committee.

The district is seeking federal matching money to go along with state funds of $17 million, already pledged to the project.

In a separate development, State Senator Linda Evans Parlette, from the 12th District, contacted school officials here and indicated that she hopes to set up a "Town Meeting" sometime in June and invite aids of several state legislators and both Congress and Senate offices.

She stated in her communication that she was including Norm Dicks' office since she was working with him on another matter.

DeWinkler, recognizing the opportunity that these occurrences represent, wanted to get the district moving on a followup.
