CopyWilliam B. Gallinger, 86, longtime resident of the Grand Coulee Dam area, died May 28, 2010, at the Avalon Care Center in Spokane. One of four children, Bill was born on April 18, 1924, in Cumberland, Wise, to Walter and Marie Buchanan Gallinger. The family moved to the Grand Coulee area in 1938. He graduated from Grand Coulee High School in 1942 and enlisted in the US Navy. He served as a torpedoman mate on the USS Kidd, receiving an honorable discharge in 1946.
Bill married Mary E. Rhodes in Grand Coulee on May 16,1947, and they made their home in Coulee Dam until 2009, when they moved to Spokane to be closer to family. He worked at Grand Coulee Dam as an operator and .shift supervisor retiring in 1979. In his retirement he could most often be found tinkering on some small engine; they always presented a challenge he couldn't resist. Bill enjoyed boating, fishing and hunting and inspired a love of these outdoor activities in his children and grandchildren. His family has wonderful memories of time with Bill at the Twin Lakes cabin. He is survived by his wife, Mary of Spokane; daughter, Christie (Steve) Ha-kola, Colville; son, John Gallinger, Chattaroy; brother, Jack Gallinger, Carson City, Nev; sisters: Helen Brose, Santa Maria, Calif., and Mary Herron, Napa, Idaho; grandsons: Dusty (Marcy) GahMnger, Gabe (Tami) Gallinger, both of Deer Park and Mike (Carley) Gallinger, Richland; granddaughters: Faith Gallinger.and Lacey (Lance) Gallinger, both of Spokane, six greatgrandchildren and special family friends Karen Morley and Trudy Gallinger.
Graveside services will be held at the Spring Canyon Cemetery on June 19, 2010, at 11:30 a.m. with a luncheon following at the Coulee Dam Community Church. Memorials may be made to the "Isle of Flags", 807 Tulip St, Coulee Dam, WA 99116.
