The Rotary Club will move ahead on its handicapped fishing pier at Steamboat Rock State Park, a spokesman said last week.

Bill Black, who has been working on the project for two years, said the club's board of directors voted $6,000 to put in the concrete foundation for the pier this fall.

"At the same time we are seeking a grant from the Rotary District of $3,000 to help with part of this expense," Black stated.

Black is a former president of the club and said he has received the final OK from the Bureau of Reclamation on the plans for the pier.

The handicapped-accessible pier will be located on the inlet near the concession stand at the park. Eventually, it will be served with a series of trails and a foot bridge that will bring visitors from one part of the park to the other.

This was confirmed by state park officials who stated last week that the bridge was part of the overall plan for Steamboat Rock.

When the fishing pier is in place, the plan is to stock the inlet waters and string a net across the mouth of the inlet at times to keep the fish in the area.

Handicap access will be on the paved trail leading to the concession area.

The project will cost $44,000, a spokesman for the Rotary Club estimated. The pier portion comes ready to install.
