Fire officials are investigating a Friday blaze that burned some 300-700 acres of grassland and brush near Elmer City.

A spokesman said the cause of the fire that started near SR-155 was suspicious because there hadn't been any lightning Friday.

The fire alarm came in to the Mt. Tolman Fire Center at 7:44 p.m., shortly after people were leaving, spokesman David Nee said.

"We had to call some back," he said.

About 100 personnel fought the fire, and some crews were still on the scene Monday putting out "hot spots" in burned timber.

The fire flared up on Sunday and firefighters continued working the blaze.

Fire departments from Elmer City, Coulee Dam, Grand Coulee, Electric City and the Bureau of Reclamation were involved in putting out the fire.

Hot conditions still remain and the fire danger is high.

Tuesday night, highway 97 was closed at Malott, between Okanogan and Brewster, due to a wildfire there.
