An Inchelium man pleaded not guilty Thursday in U.S. District Court in Spokane on charges that he killed his wife.

Kevin L. Pakootas, 23, is charged with the death of Colette Peone Pakootas, also 23, Sept. 5 at the couple's rural home near Inchelium.

Pakootas was also charged with attempted murder of a Florida man, Mark Edgett, whom he found naked on the floor of his home with his wife.

The FBI report alleged that Pakootas came home from a party early in the morning Sept. 5, and found his wife and Edgett having sex on the floor. The report said that Pakootas beat the pair with the bar of a chain saw and his fists.

The two were hospitalized, and his wife died Sept. 11 at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane. Edgett is still hospitalized and in serious condition.

Pakootas is currently in Spokane County Jail on federal charges of second-degree murder and assault with the intent to commit murder in the case of Edgett.

Two others have also been charged in the incident. A cousin, Eli M. Pakootas, 30, was arrested and charged with aiding and abetting and obstruction of justice, and James L. Phillips, 27, is also facing charges of aiding and abetting.

Eli Pakootas and Phillips are held in the Tribal Detention Center near Nespelem.
