Consider carefully and listen

School district officials should listen carefully to all possible input in the coming weeks when they consider options for building a new school complex.

With the whole as-yet-unfunded dream seeming like a distant possibility, officials could easily be tempted to kick the details of public input to a pile of tasks labeled something other than "top priority." That would be a mistake. The best, most-deserving, slam-dunk causes can easily be derailed if people with a stake in the outcome don't feel that they've been heard, or that their concerns have not been addressed. And everyone has a stake in the outcome of a new school.

In process of pursuing this progress, school officials will also have plenty to share with the general public -- lots of options, lots of practical restraints. Perhaps the first prickly hurdle to assess will be picking a site for the new complex. This is the kind of issue on which intelligent people can completely disagree for perfectly sound reasons all the way around. Officials and the general public must all pay close attention to what all involved are saying on that subject.

This is a process that should not be rushed, especially with a project such as this, which depends so much on the good will of all and the politics of many. The school district will do well to take the time to listen to all concerns and to explain the complexities of building a modern school. Citizens will do well to keep the expressions of their opinions and desires rational, civil and looking forward.
