School board members showed their frustration Monday night during a discussion about finding a superintendent.

Director Susan Chaffee spent time recently checking with school districts that have part-time administrators.

"The message I got was that the superintendents did their work and then left. They often weren't around when there was problems," Chaffee reported.

With next year's budget hanging in the balance, board members are trying to figure out a way that they can have a full-time superintendent and do the business side in house.

Current Superintendent Jeff Loe has advised the board that he would like to return to being a business manager. He is in his third year doing both jobs.

He had outlined to the board recently what it would cost to have a part-time superintendent, or a part-time business manager.

The board faces a decision while efforts are underway to build a new K-12 facility. That process is ongoing with the architectural firm Design West leading the charge.

One board member stated that maybe Loe would have to continue his dual role for another year or two, or until the board was able to figure out where the student enrollment would settle down.

The district has been losing about 30 students a year. Last year the district lost 52 students. .

The senior class this year is 79 students. However, the following year it could be down to 47.

Loe didn't respond to the off-hand comment about continuing as superintendent.
