Electric City may have a new contract agreement with Grand Coulee to provide police protection for 2010.

The agreement calls for Electric City to pay Grand Coulee a total of $75,511.97, for the new contract.

Electic City council members approved the new contract at their Tuesday night meeting, subject to the approval of their city attorney, after negotiations with members of the Grand Coulee council.

The 2009 contract was for $68,792.17.

The contract calls for Grand Coulee police to answer police calls, provide traffic control, including radar checks, check on business buildings during the night, prowl car patrols, serve process notices, conduct criminal investigations and attend civic functions. A Grand Coulee duty officer will attend at least one council meeting a month and report on activity.

The agreement will be subject to a cost-of-living increase annually, between 2.5 percent and 5 percent, depending on the cost of living increases from July to July.

In addition to the amount of the contract, Electric City will reimburse Grand Coulee 28 percent of the fees billed to Grand Coulee by the Multi Agency Communications Center for law enforcement dispatch services.

Electric City also will commission and authorize Grand Coulee through the appointment of its chief of police, Mel Hunt, as town marshal to enforce and carry into effect all city laws.

Electric City will also pay its own jail service expenses at Grant County, the agreement states.

The contract extends through Dec. 31, 2014, with negotiations for the next contract to begin early that next year.
