Progress is still moving forward on the Old Stoney renovation project, says museum director Rocky Courchaine, although it's currently on hold pending the final outcome and remedy of a Department of Environmental Quality assessment.

A partial assessment by the DEQ early in August revealed asbestos in the building. "Until that's removed," Rocky said, "everything else is kind of on hold." Courchaine said several fluorescent lights need to be removed from the building as well. A DEQ grant will be applied for in mid-September, the proceeds of which would help fund removal of hazardous materials.

Once the area is clear of hazardous materials, museum personnel are seeking volunteers to help take down lathe and plaster inside the building. For more information or to volunteer your assistance, call the museum at 283-3666.

Courchaine reminds everyone that the fall membership drive is coming up in September. Interested citizens are encouraged to join with a new membership or renew an existing membership. "We're hoping people in the county will get more involved with their museum," Courchaine said.

Donations are still being accepted to help fund the Old Stoney renovation project. To donate, stop by the museum or mail a check to PO Box 63, Sundance, WY 82729. All donations are tax-deductible.

"I'm An Old Stoner" benefit t-shirts are on sale now at the museum, Country Cottage, and the Wild Side. The cost is $20 per shirt and all proceeds benefit Old Stoney.

Courchaine also reminds everyone that a new exhibit will remain at the museum until September 28. You 11 certainly want to stop by to see Martin Stupich's collection of Photographs of the Red Desert.
