Charles Melvin Smith Jr.

Charles Melvin Smith Jr., 78, passed away at his home in Casa Grande on Dec. 26, 2009.

He was born on Dec. 1, 1931 in Superior to Ophie (Toney) and Charles Smith Sr. He was in the Coast Guard for four years, having served in Korea. Charles was a Conductor for the Southern Pacific Railroad for more than 25 years. He was an avid rock hound and loved all of nature's treasures. He owned Casa Verde Nurseries, and after retirement he managed the Airport Tavern, Cucous and the Chatterbox. His survivors include three sons, Charles Smith III of Payson, James Smith of Casa Grande and Bill Smith of Arizona City; one daughter, Cheryl Hively of Casa Grande; and a sister, Pamela Dyresen; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grand-children.

A Graveside service was held Monday, Jan. 4, 2010 at Fairview Cemetery in Superior, with Charlie Barber reciting the Eulogy.
