Scholarships, recognition and awards presented to SHS students at honors night ceremony

Superior High School student achievement and academic success was featured May 6 at the Honors Night ceremony in the high school multipurpose room.

Following the Pledge of Allegiance led by Twila Hernandez, Principal/Superintendent Pete Guzman welcomed all who had come to celebrate the accomplishments of the community's youth. Following the welcome speech, he recognized 2010 Valedictorian Dominique Castillo and Salutatorians Twila Hernandez and Manuel Ortega.

Also recognized were Class Presidents Twila Hernandez (Senior), Ryan Everhart (Junior), Sabrina Castillo (Sophomore) and Christine Grap (Freshman).

Recognition followed for Student Council officers: President Twila Hernandez, Secretary Christin Urquijo and Treasurer Manuel Ortega.

Recognition of National Honor Society included President Christin Urquijo, Vice President Twila' Hernandez, Secretary Gabriela Godinez, Treasurer Manuel Ortega and members Dominique Castillo, Jerry Campos, Gabriel Serrano, Xavier Castro, Isiah Sanchez, Ashley Valenzuela, Jessica Castro, Vincent Velasquez, Jesse Zavala, Sabrina Castillo, Eric Smith, Lorena Medrano, Shayna Wickwire, Julian Contreras, Cristine Lopez and Jordan Romero.

A number of individuals, groups and organizations participated in announcing and presenting scholarships and awards:

Jerry Campos and Dominique Castillo received the Arizona State University Provost Dean's Scholarship. Twila Hernandez and James Roten were Pinal Town Hall delegates. Rudy Betancourt, Ashley Valenzuela and Gabriela Godinez received the Lopez/Gomez Scholarship. Dominique Castillo and Ashley Valenzuela received the Woodmen of the World Scholarship.

Superior Rotary Scholarships went to Jerry Campos and Lorrae Jimenez. Superior Rotary Essay Certificates were received by Paulina Bracamonte, Ryan Everhart, Twila Hernandez and Christin Urquijo.

United Superiorite Scholarships were awarded to Gabriel Alejandro Serrano, Twila Hernandez, Christin Urquijo, Jerry Eugene Campos Jr., Isiah Alejandro Sanchez, Dominique Michelle Castillo and Michael Xavier Lira Castro.

The Superior Education Association Scholarship went to Twila Hernandez and Gabriel Serrano. Ashley Valenzuela and Jerry Campos received the Social Club Scholarship. The Optimist Scholarship/Richard Castaneda Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Twila Hernandez and Manuel Ortega. Xavier Castro, Christin Urquijo and Twila Hernandez were recipients of the David Montano Memorial Scholarship.

Christin Urquijo and Isiah Sanchez received the Ceasar Chavez Memorial Scholarship. Twila Hernandez and Manuel Ortega were recipients of the Babe Ruth Sportsmanship Award. The American Legion Award was received by Ana Campos and Christopher Floyd.

The Resolution Copper Scholarship was awarded to Jose Castellanos, Gabriel Serrano and Vincent Velasquez. Twila Hernandez received the Resolution Copper Steven L. Besich Leadership Grant.

Shayna Wickwire was named the Hugh O'Brien Leadership delegate, with Adrienne Hernandez the alternate.

Girls and Boys State delegates were Ana Campos, with Andrea Betancourt as alternate, and Ryan Everhart and Vincent Velasquez. Other award and/or scholarship recipients included Hannah Wager (Pinal County Federal Credit Union Scholarship), Lorrae Jimenez (Arizona Private Schools Association), Twila Hernandez (Wendy's High School Heisman Scholar-Athlete), Gilbert Romero (Woodmen of the World History Award), Christin Urquijo (Cobre Valley Medical Center Scholarship), Jerry Campos (Eastern Star Scholarship), Gabriel Serrano (John Mitchell Scholarship), Christin Urquijo (Grand Canyon

University President's Scholarship), Manuel Ortega (Stockhaus Scholarship) and Rudy Betancourt (Coppernet Scholarship). More honors went to Michael Xavier Castro (Perfect Attendance), Christin Urquijo (Business & Technology/Career-College Prep), Mario Padilla (Business & Technology/Career Exploration), Allysia Perea (Business & Technology/Education Professions I), Samantha Valdez (Business & Technology/Education Professions II), Twila Hernandez (Business & Technology/Journalism), Jesse Zavala

(Business & Technology/Marketing I), Hannah Wager (Business & Technology/Marketing II), Damion Vidal (Business & Technology/PLATO), Jesse Aguilar (English 9), Jesse Zavala English 10), Gilbert Romero (English 11), Twila Hernandez (Advanced Placement English), Monica Ochoa (Family and Consumer Sciences/Early Childhood), Korteney Urquijo (Family and Consumer Sciences/Intro-duclion to Culinary Arts), Louie Fuentes (Family and Consumer Sciences/Career Exploration) and Eric Smith (Family and Consumer Sciences/Child Development).
