Fatal accident at Ray Mine

Robert Stewart, 26, of Globe died early Sunday morning after his truck fell on its side. He was driving a haul truck at ASARCO's Ray Mine and contacted the safety berm, causing the truck to fall over.

He fell approximately 25 feet from the truck and was pronounced dead at the scene. An ASARCO press release stated that the cause of the accident is' unknown and that no one else was injured.a Lt. Tamatha Villar, PCSO Public Information Officer, said in an email that both OSHA and MSHA were notified. MSHA and the Pinal County Medical Examiner responded but, "investigation of the incident will be handled by MSHA," she said.

Joseph F. Lapinsky, President and Chief Executive Officer, said that the company is cooperating with authorities investigating the accident.

"Our sympathy and prayers go out to family members, friends and fellow miners who are affected by this loss," Lapinsky said
