Locals have success at state fair

DES MOINES -- More Sioux County residents met with success during judging at the Iowa State Fair.

Sioux Center's Jon Scholten was second for a Chester White Gilt Class 3 and he was overall group reserve champion during the Berkshire Swine Show on Monday, Aug. 16. He finished second and third in Gilt Four. He placed third in Boar Two.

Scholten was first in the Hampshire Gilts, eighth in Gilt Four and fifth in Boar Four.

Tyler Faber, also of Sioux Center, produced the grand champion market steer in Division II. Faber also won a purple ribbon for a crossbred steer.

Doug Nielsen of Rock Valley was both 7th and 13th in the Winter Ram Lamb division. Nielsen was sixth in the Pair-of-Ram Lambs division.

In addition, Nielsen was ninth in the Winter Ewe Lamb and 16th in the Spring Ewe Lamb category and he was 11th and 12th in the Late Spring Ewe Lamb contest. He also participated in the pair of lambs and young flock divisions.

Static exhibits The following youngsters won ribbons for static exhibits during the Iowa State Fair.

Hull Jeramy De Vos -- Clothing and photography, blue ribbons

Kayla De Weerd -- Clothing, food and nutrition, go the distance, photography and agriculture and natural resources (2), blue ribbons

Mitchell Nettinga -- Science, mechanics and engineering, red ribbon

Rock Valley

Jessica Kats -- photography, red ribbon

Lindsay Kats -- visual art certificate

Doon Jennifer Koedam, photography, blue ribbon

In addition, De Weerd was honored by Thread Magazine, printed by the Taunton Press, for outstanding sewn garments.

She also received a Live Healthy Iowa award for her Nintendo Wii program at Boyden-Hull Middle School. She received a merchandise certificate and a tote bag.

Other categories

Maddie Ranschau of Rock Valley was named the reserve champion in intermediate showmanship for a nubian under 2 years old in milk.

Katlyn Harman of Hull produced the senior division reserve champion doe, in the 24- to 36-month-old category.

Molly Bomgaars, Kayla De Weerd and Austin Mosier all earned blue ribbons for producing meat goats. Nick Mosier won a red ribbon for producing meat goats.

Elisabeth Tiedeman earned a blue ribbon in the does 3-6 months old division.

In horses, Andrea Loges, a Boyden-Hull student who has a Sheldon address, won a blue ribbon for a trail horse.

Courtney Schafer, another B-H student with a

Sheldon address, produced a champion duroc gilt and reserve grand champion purebred gilt. Eric Schafer was named reserve champion in the spotted gilt category.

De Haan's inducted into Hall

Harlan and Phyllis De Haan of Orange City were inducted into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame.

The Sioux County Iowa State University Extension Staff nominated the couple.

These active 4-H'ers have been leaders of the Holland Windmills 4-H Club. Phyllis judges at numerous county fairs and Harlan is on the Sioux County extension council.

The 4-H Hall of Fame was initiated in 2002.

State Treasure Hunt

Iowa state treasurer Michael Fitzgerald announced the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt was a success at the state fair again this year.

More than 7, 500 claims of property were discovered totaling more than $1.5 million including a treasure valued at $39, 676.30.

Each year, millions of dollars in unclaimed property is turned over to the state treasurer's office. It has returned more than $122 million in unclaimed property to more than 310, 000 people since the program was started in 1983.

Common forms of unclaimed property

are savings or checking accounts, stocks, uncashed checks, life insurance policies, utility security deposits and safe box deposit contents.
