Louise Hyatt Edwards, 92, of Whittier, died Thursday, Aug. 27, 2009 in a Murphy medical center.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 30, at Shoal Creek Baptist Church, with the Rev. Stephen Jamison officiating.

Burial was at Thomas Memorial Cemetery.

She was born in Haywood County to the late Beulah Shelton and John Lafayette Hyatt, and raised in the Qualla community. She graduated from Western Carolina University and taught school for 42 years, the last 35 years as a first grade teacher at Qualla Elementary School. In 1979, she was named Jackson County Teacher of the Year. She was a member of Shoal Creek Baptist Church, where she was a deaconess. She was a member of the National Association of Educators, a charter member of the Beta Lambda chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa sorority, a member of OCE Chapter 139 Order of the Eastern Star, Qualla Homemakers Club, N.C. Retired School Personnel and the JacksOn County Historical Society. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Alton Robert Edwards; one daughter, Lois Edwards Burch; and one brother, John Shelton Hyatt. Surviving are one daughter, Janie Edwards Merchant of Conover; one brother, Samuel Perry Hyatt; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
