The Eden Valley-Watkins High School gym bustled with excitement Thursday afternoon, March 11, as a ceremony was held during which the diversiCOM Teacher of the Year award was presented to Julie Bulau of the Eden Valley-Watkins Schools. Students cheered as they discovered that one of their teachers was the recipient of the award presented by Dave Del Zoppo, chief operating officer for diversiCOM.

Julie was nominated by Principal Bruce Kiehn who said, "Julie Bulau is an exemplary classroom instructor who has the unique ability to relate to all students. She has a special gift of connecting with youth and making them feel important. Consequently, students learn content material well, and admire and respect Julie. She is a tremendous asset to the Eden Valley-Watkins School District, and her students are extremely fortunate to have her as a teacher."

Bulau was selected from a pool of excellent nominees in the area by a selection committee consisting of five community members and school officials from the various school districts that are served by diversiCOM.

"diversiCOM serves a large part of central Minnesota and as part of our operating philosophy we look for areas to give back to the communities we serve," said diversiCOM CEO Dave Del Zoppo. "We've always been a strong supporter of education as this is a key component of any community's success."

Bulau received $2,000 and a trophy from diversiCom and the school received $1,000 to be used for technology needs. She teaches English classes to grades 7-12 and has made notable contributions to the District including the creation of an afterschool study program entitled "The Write Place," leading the Knowledge Bowl team, and also serving as an advisor to the state award-winning Eagles Cry student newspaper.

The diversiCOM Teacher of the Year Award was created in an effort to reward excellence in teaching and is presented to a teacher located within the diversiCOM service areas who demonstrates an excellence towards their students.

In December diversiCOM started asking for nominations from area residents and schools. The nominees are scored based on criteria, such as individual teaching style, creativity in encouraging student achievement, consistent support of students' growth, and community involvement

Since 1985 diversiCOM has been awarding scholarships to area high school seniors in their service areas and since that time has awarded more than $96,000 in memory of their long time owner L.H. Arvig.
