Edmund Winter, 90

Edmund Winter died Saturday, March 27, 2010, at his Watkins home. He was 90.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 30, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Watkins with Fr. John Brunner officiating. Visitation was from 4-8 p.m. Monday, and 8-10 a.m. Tuesday at Ertl Funeral Home in Watkins. Senior citizen rosary was at 4 p.m., parish prayers at 6 p.m., and American Legion prayers at 7:30 p.m. Monday. Interment was in the St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery in Watkins.

Edmund J. Winter was born Feb. 12, 1920, in Watkins to Gerhard and Theresa (Meierhofer) Winter. Edmund grew up and received his education in the Watkins area. He served in the United States Army during World War II. Dec. 27, 1943, Edmund was married to Aurelia Becker at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Watkins. She preceded him in death May 24, 2006. He farmed near Watkins for a short time, and he worked for the Watkins Creamery and Reuben Roeser Construction. Edmund worked at Cold Spring Granite for many years and also for MN State Curb and Gutter for about 10 years prior to retiring in 1982.

Edmund was a member of the Watkins Senior Citizens and the American Legion Post 453 in Watkins. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, and his hobbies included gardening, growing flowers, and meticulous yard work. Edmund especially enjoyed visiting with family and friends, and was a faithful visitor to the residents at Hilltop Care Center in Watkins.

Edmund was preceded in death by his parents, wife Aurelia, daughter-in-law Sharon Winter, brother Alvin Winter, and sister Margaret Westberg.

He is survived by his sons Harry Winter of Watkins (and special friend Marie Bohning of Forest City), David (and Barb) Winter of Montrose; foreign exchange daughter Paola Simoni-Silveira of Brasilia, Brazil; six grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; and brother-in-law Don Becker of Kimball.

Music was by Mary Streit and the church choir. Casket bearers were grandchildren Dianna Ertl, Kelly Mortenson, Darala Loch, Tami Berg, Tom Winter, and Heidi Donnay.
