Eugene Schwegel, 93

Eugene Schwegel of Wat-kins, formerly of Collegeville and St. Joseph, died Thursday, April 23, 2010, at the Assumption Home in Cold Spring. He was 93.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Watkins with Fr. John Brun-ner officiating. Interment was at St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery.

Eugene Schwegel was born Dec. 13, 1916, to Joseph and Mary (Meyer) Schwegel in Collegeville. He married Olivia Ressemann June 7, 1938, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Collegeville. They farmed in St. Joseph for many years, and he also worked for the St. Joseph Meat Market and the saw mill. They moved to Casselton, ND., where Eugene worked for a farm corporation for about 13 years, prior to moving to Watkins. He also operated a threshing machine and corn-shredding service.

Eugene was a member of the St. Anthony Catholic Church in Watkins, and was a member of the Catholic Aid Association. He was also a former secretary of the St. Joseph Rod and Gun Club. His hobbies included deer hunting, fishing, gardening, wood cutting, and reading western novels. He enjoyed baseball, playing the harmonica, singing old German songs, and making wine. Eugene was skilled at sharpening saw blades and knives, and he also knitted socks and gloves for himself and sold them to others. His wife Olivia died April 16, 2002.

Eugene was preceded in death by his parents; wife Olivia; son Eugene Jr.; sons-in-law Ralph Stein, Mark Boisjolie, Donald Theisen; daughters-in-law Doris Schwegel, Lillian Schwegel; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers Ted, Sam, and Tony Schwegel.

He is survived by his children Pauline Stein of Watkins, Jean-nette Schwegel of Great Falls, Mont., Veronica (and Donald) Gill of Durbin, N.D., Joe (and Donna) Schwegel of St. Cloud, Betty (and Leonard) Walz of St. Joseph, John (and Marilyn) Schwegel of St. Cloud, Esther (and Julius) Langner of Rice, Susan Boisjolie of Le Sueur, Charles (and Reggie) Schwegel of Eden Valley, Alvin

(and Leah) Schwegel of Watkins, and Helen Williams of Watkins; about 50 grandchildren; more than 40 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchild-, ren; brother and sisters William "Bill" (and Bernice) Schwegel of St. Cloud, Loretta Feldhous of Rockville, and Mary Murphy of Albany.

Music was by Mary Streit and the church choir. Casket bearers were grandchildren. Arrangements were by the Ertl Funeral Home of Watkins.
