June 17 was a day when severe weather struck all of Minnesota and took its toll. Throughout the state, 39 tornado sightings were reported. Wadena in northern Minnesota and Albert Lea in southeastern Minnesota were hit the hardest by different tornados, and both cities received considerable damage. Three people were killed in Minnesota. Around central Minnesota, the weather got rough but no tornados touched down in our area. Near Lake Sylvia there was a large funnel that never touched down, but violent clouds were seen throughout the late afternoon and evening. In Buffalo a tornado did touch down. Throughout the area there was relatively little damage done as central Minnesota dodged a proverbial bullet.
