Bernard Proft, 85

Bernard J. Proft of Miller, Ind., died Friday, June 4, 2010, at his home. He was 85.

A memorial service was held Wednesday, June 9, at Rees Funeral Home, Olson Chapel, in Portage with Deacon Richard Huber officiating. Cremation preceded the service.

Bernard was born March 24, 1925, to Bemhard A. and Florence M. (MuMhill) Proft in Minneapolis, and he had been a resident of the Miller section of Gary, Ind. since 1949.

He was a United States Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, and he retired from U.S. Steel with 33 years service. He was formerly very active at St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church, serving on the building committee for the church and the school. Bernard was also a Cub Scout leader, member of the Knights of Columbus, member of

Miller Dunes American Legion Post #279, and a former president of the Gary Art League.

Bernard was preceded in death by his parents; infant brothers Joseph and Richard; brothers-in-law J. Robert Espy and Dennis L. Serbus; and uncle Bernard F. Mul-vihill.

He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years Geraldine; children Jim (and Kim) Proft of Lake Station, Berry Proft of Portage, Alison Unland of Texas, Holly (and Dave) Araki of Calif., Lynn (and Brian) Cox of Porter; seven grandchildren Debbi, Jason and Ronnie Proft, Nathan Cox, Michael McCoy, Steven Unland, and J.C. (and Heather) Proft; several great-grandchildren; brother Charles (and Pat) Proft; sisters Florence Espy and Dor-othee Serbus of Minnesota; aunt H. Rose Mulvihill, also of Minnesota; and several nieces and nephews.
