One piece of garbage at a time, Tuskegee's Clean City Commission cleaned the streets of District 3 on Saturday, March 13 with the aid of volunteers from neighboring communities and the Will Graham Celebration Community Action Project (CAP).

Armed with trash bags and garbage pincers, more than 31 volunteers, ranging from eight to 80 years old, gathered at the Washington Plaza early in the morning before dispersing in two buses to different projects.

At the end of the day, the teamed-up groups hauled away 70 35-gallon sized trash bags filled with litter, said Clean City Commission Chairman Dothel Edwards.

This collected garbage came from only five streets in the district as efforts were cut short because of weather conditions and a lack of helping hands. Edwards said he hopes more community members get involved to restore the image of their city.

"About as fast as we can clean it up, people throw (garbage) back out there," he said.

The two groups will lend their services again this Saturday, March 20. Volunteers will focus efforts on home repair for select dilapidated houses in District 3.

Sign-up for District 2 projects for next month with target date April 17 will begin this outing.

The Commission states its "mission is for Tuskegee to be a more attractive place to live, work and visit." Edwards said the Commission wishes to achieve its goal through various projects with the help of schools, organizations, churches and other entities throughout the area.
