Tuskegee University police officer John Moon has been charged with the rape of a young girl. ABI expects investigation to uncover more

Tuskegee University police officer Lt. John David Moon, 45, of Tuskegee, has been charged with raping a young girl at approximately 5 a.m. on Sunday, October 18, while off campus and off duty.

Moon has been suspended from his job by Tuskegee University and is being held in the Macon County Detention Facility on $125,000 bond.

In a case handled solely by the Alabama Bureau of Investigations (ABI), Moon was arrested Sunday, October 18 on charges of first-degree sodomy, first-degree rape and enticing a child into a vehicle.

Fifth Circuit Assistant District Attorney Kaylia Lane said a 15-year-old female made allegations against Moon that prompted the ABI's investigation and establishment of probable cause for the charges.

Sgt. Steve Jarrett of the Department of Public Safety, a spokesperson for the ABI, said the agency's investigation is continuing.

"ABI has developed information that indicates there may be additional victims and anticipates that additional charges may be forthcoming," a statement from Jarrett reads.

According to a statement by Tuskegee University President Dr. Benjamin F. Payton, Moon has worked with the TU Police Department for two and a half years.

Moon's initial appearance before Macon County District Judge Aubrey Ford was held Friday, October 23 at 9 a.m. where he was appointed attorney Sylvester Smith as his legal representation.

Moon's preliminary hearing will be held in three to four weeks according to Macon County Circuit Clerk David Love.
