The arrival of September also means the renewal of Centertown Days, one of two top events in the small Ohio County community.

A lot of what made last year's celebration a big success will be back for this year's event, but, some won't.

Moody Arnold, chairwoman of Centertown Days said this year's renewal will not include the Little Miss and Mister contest or the Miss and Mister competition.

"Those events cost us a lot for trophies and crowns and we just decided that money could be put to better use and still have a very nice two-day event," Arnold said.

Scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Sept. 11-12, Centertown Days is expected to be even more successful than last year because Fordsville Days, sometimes scheduled on the same days, has different dates.

"Despite the difference in miles of the two events, it still will help us having ours all to ourselves," she said.

Arnold said this year's event will include Center-town Days T-shirts and the possibility of several more arts and crafts booths.

"We're having a lot of people calling about booths and hopefully that will equate to a lot more activity in that area," she said.

The event kicks off this year with a Gospel Singing from 7 until 10 p.m. on Friday evening. Featured groups will be the Burden Family and the Centertown Holiness Youth Choir.

Saturday will be chock full of events, starting with the 10 a.m. parade that begins at the Centertown Baptist Church, and the chicken dinners starting at 10:30 a.m. at the Masonic Lodge. Proceeds will go to the Christmas Fund.

The always-popular Baby Contest will begin in the parking lot of the Commonwealth Community Bank at 11 a.m. try fee and all contestants should be dressed in play wear only.

Also starting at 11 a.m. will be the tractor pull, sponsored by Luttrell & Sons.

The annual talent show will kick off at noon, followed by the horseshoe and washer-pitching contest at 1 p.m.

The father-son look-alike contest is set for 1 p.m., followed by the mother-daughter look-alike contest at 1:30. The cornhole pitching contest, with a $20 entry fee, will start at 2 p.m., while the pet show starts at the same time.

The Hawkins Family and Echols Church of God drama teams will perform from 2 to 4 p.m., and the lawn mower and golf cart races also will begin at 4:00.

There will be children's games from 4 to 6 p.m., Mr. and Mrs. Centertown contest, and a children's dance at 6 p.m., and Whits End entertainment with Albert English from 7 to 10 p.m. The annual raffle will be held at 9 p.m.
