A dead-end highway and a 19-year-old motorcycle rider's inability to stop claimed a life at the intersection of Highway 1738 and Highway 764 last Saturday night.

According to Ohio County Deputy Sheriff Randy Taylor, three motorcycle riders, all from Fordsville, were traveling west on Highway 1738 when they approached the dead-end intersection with Highway 764.

Cody Helm, the lead rider failed to stop and slammed into the embankment head-on, according to Taylor.

Helm was taken the Ow-ensboro Medical Health Systems, where he died at 3:30 a.m. Sunday.

The second cyclist, Jesse Montgomery, 18, also failed to stop and struck the same embankment at a slightly different location, according to the deputy. Montgomery was taken to the Owensboro hospital, where he was treated and released.

Brant Rusher, 19, was the third cyclist in line and managed to stop before hitting the embankment, Taylor said. Rusher, who was not injured, managed to render some aid and called 911.

All three of the riders were wearing helmets, the deputy said.
