J. C. Riley

John Crow Riley, 96, of Hartford, died Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, at Dogwood Retreat in Hartford. He was born April 28, 1913, in Hartford to Rolly Rowan Riley and Bess Fair Riley. At his death, Mr. Riley was president of Citizens Bank and a member of its board of directors. He was employed at Citizens Bank for more than 73 years. Through the years, he was actively involved in many community endeavors. He was the oldest member of the Hartford Christian Church, where he had been a member for 78 years. During that time, he served as an elder, Sunday School teacher and as vice chairman and chairman of the board for more than 40 years. He was a former member of the Ohio County Hospital Board of Directors, where he also served as chairman. He was a former longtime member of the Ohio County Health Department Board, treasurer of the local American Red Cross Chapter, a member of the Hartford Masonic Lodge No. 675, a member of the Hartford Volunteer Fire Department, the Ration Board and other civic groups. Mr. Riley's love for baseball was well known. He attended Western Kentucky University on a baseball scholarship, where he played baseball for Coach Ed Diddle. He also played for the Hartford Christian Church team, as well as the Hartford, Beaver Dam and Bowling Green teams. He was a member of Western's "W Club."

He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Reunelle White Riley, on Sept. 12, 1994; a granddaughter, Megan Alina Lewis, on July 13, 1992; a brother, George Riley, on Aug. 11, 2002; and a sister, Emily Fair Young, on March 6, 2009.

Survivors include two daughters, Colleen Lewis and husband Perry and Kathleen Riley, both of Hartford; two granddaughters, Cara Lewis-Lenzo of Hartford and Lee Stenberg Martin of Arlington, Va.; two great-granddaughters, Alina Lenzo of Hartford and Lilly Martin of Arlington; a brother, Mike Riley and his wife Joyce of Livermore; a sister-in-law, Sara Riley of Hartford; a nephew, Michael Riley and wife Chris of Humboldt, Tenn.; and three nieces, Emily Miller and husband Andy of London, England, Sarah Bess Filby of Mooresville, Ind., and Sally Garner of Whitehouse Station, N.J.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Nov. 11, atMiller-Schapmire Funeral Home in Hartford with Brother Terry L. Peer officiating. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery in Hartford.
